Learn to discern between your ego self and your true self. Learn not to be caught in the ego’s guise; pretending to be you and trying to control your behaviours.
Ego will always smell of fear on some level. It is inherently insecure. It seeks to prove itself, it often has rigid opinions and needs to protect it’s ideas of identity and is easily offended. It is unable to fully listen. It can play victim or be arrogant, entitled or indignant and it operates from expectations and with agendas (even if only subtly). It lives through protective mechanisms, judgement and comparison and presents in thoughts of ourselves as either superior or inferior, never equal. It focuses on separation and difference.
Our true heart however has no ideas about ourself. It is both empty and full simultaneously. It is enough.
It is more than our emotions, it is like a kind of quiet inner knowing, a sense of presence, a loving awareness. It is a safe resting place for our emotions to be seen and processed. It bases its conduct through our higher conscience and what is true, it values connection and kindness.
Don’t dismiss your true self, your true heart. It will always call us toward goodness, compassion, inner growth and integrity.
